China’s Solar Revolution Has Now Surpassed Coal

China has reached a remarkable turning point in its energy transformation: solar power has overtaken coal as the country’s largest source of installed electricity-generating capacity for the first time.

As of the end of July, China had approximately 1,286 gigawatts (GW) of installed solar capacity, narrowly surpassing the 1,285 GW of coal-fired capacity, according to China’s National Energy Administration. Solar now represents more than 30% of the country’s total installed generating capacity.

The milestone is particularly striking because China’s solar industry barely existed on a comparable scale two decades ago. Beijing deliberately built an enormous domestic solar supply chain, supporting everything from polysilicon and wafers to solar cells, panels, inverters and large-scale project development. Massive investment, manufacturing scale and rapid technological improvements drove costs down while allowing Chinese companies to produce solar equipment at unprecedented volumes. China now supplies more than 80% of the world’s photovoltaic modules, giving it an extraordinary influence over the global solar industry.

The achievement, however, requires an important distinction: China has not yet replaced coal as its primary source of electricity generation. Solar panels can only produce electricity when sunlight is available, while coal plants can operate around the clock. During the first half of 2026, wind and solar together supplied about 24.6% of China’s electricity, while coal still accounted for approximately 49.7%.

Nevertheless, the direction of travel is unmistakable. China is rapidly building a power system in which solar and wind provide an increasing share of electricity, while batteries, transmission infrastructure and other technologies are becoming increasingly important for balancing intermittent renewable generation.

For the solar industry, China’s achievement could prove more important than the headline itself. The country has effectively demonstrated that solar can be deployed at a national scale previously associated with fossil fuels. That creates enormous opportunities for manufacturers of solar panels, batteries, power electronics, transmission equipment and grid-management technology—while putting continued pressure on traditional coal and, over time, other fossil-fuel industries.

There is also a major geopolitical dimension. China’s dominance of solar manufacturing gives Beijing significant influence over one of the world’s most important emerging energy technologies. Countries seeking to expand renewable energy increasingly depend on Chinese-made equipment, creating both commercial opportunities and strategic tensions with the United States and Europe.

The transition is not without problems. China’s grid is struggling to absorb the enormous amount of new renewable generation. Reuters reported that hundreds of terawatt-hours of renewable electricity were curtailed during the first half of 2026 because of grid constraints, demonstrating that building solar farms is becoming easier than building the infrastructure necessary to efficiently use all of their electricity.

For China’s future, however, the shift could be transformative. Greater reliance on domestically produced solar and other renewables can reduce the country’s exposure to imported fossil fuels, lower energy costs and eventually reduce carbon emissions. It also reinforces China’s position as a leader in the technologies likely to define the next generation of global energy.
